Backyard Compost Bins

There are basically two types of backyard compost bins — those that are stationary and those that can be rotated.

Our recommendation is to choose one balancing between the amount of work you want to do versus how it fits in your yard. Some folks may prefer a bin that is more aesthetically appealing but requires more maintenance and others may want something that is a no-brainer but looks, well… clunky. Here are some various product suggestions based on our research:

Rotating Compost Bins

	The EnviroCycle gets great reviews from Amazon and Treehugger users for it’s easy of use (it effortlessly spins on it’s base) and fast set up. It comes ready to use, so there’s no complicated installation procedures. So simple to turn, even small kids can join in!  The company has been around for nearly 20 years, so you can be assured this is a product you can trust. Special bonus — made with a high volume of recycled plastic. $169 at Amazon.

	The ComposTumbler receives 4 stars from Amazon users and is discounted at $204. It’s recommended as a low-maintenance compost bin because of its ease of use, including the added benefit compared to other bins — it’s mobility.  The ComposTumbler holds 5 cubic feet of compost and is a good choice for folks who don’t have a lot of space.

Stationary Compost Bins

	The Earthsaver is probably the most advanced stationary composting bin on the market. Requiring only 10 seconds of maintenance a month, this bad boy churns out up to 10 gallons of juicy compost in just 4 weeks, about twice as fast as other bins.  Amazon users love it and say it’s well worth the $199 price. If you’re looking for an ultra easy to use bin that create yummy compost quickly, then the Earthsaver is for you!
	The Soilsaver Classic Composter is another popular item, requires a little more work, but is half the price at only $87.  Best of all it’s made from 100% recycled material and has a locking lid that keeps out pests.

	The Geobin Composting System is a cheaper solution geared towards yard waste, organizing it into an attractive and functional container. The Geobin takes grass cuttings and leaves, converting them into a nutrient-rich soil conditioner for use in your garden. Made of rugged, lightweight plastic, it’s easy to assemble, fill and maintain. (Note: because of the multiple air holes, its not recommended for food scraps as it’s more susceptible to invasion by various critters.)

Countertop Composter Products

Countertop composter units are handy for collecting your kitchen waste before placing it into your backyard composting bin. Our two favorite models are Norpro’s EZ Grip and the RSVP Endurance which is a little more stylish and dishwasher safe. Both units use carbon filters to keep orders down and can either sit under the sink or on top of the counter.
