About Us

This site began in 2005 around a group of concerned citizens in Olympia, Washington with the aim of furthering the expansion of small organic farms in the South Sound.

There is a crisis. America’s food supply is mainly the hands of giant corporations whose mission is to increase profits for shareholders, not increase the quality of their products. On the contrary, the structurally mandated need for corporations to increase profits forces them to seek cost-cutting measures at every turn.

The result?

Giant factory farms that produce food like other mass consumable items. Corn, wheat, rice, vegetables… these are NOT widgets like plastic products to be placed on a shelf, consumed and disposed. Food is life, food is sustenance, but in the last few decades it has become increasingly a source of profit that can be profit-maximized at every turn. The use of pesticides, genetic engineering, oil and natural gas for fertilizers… all of these things are turning our food supply into something out of Frankenstein. The work of mad scientists aiming for profits, not nutrition. (Food, Inc. is a great documentary explaining this in greater detail.)

Unfortunately, the group that got together disbanded without meeting it’s goals. Perhaps the issues we were tackling were too large, beyond the scope of a few individuals.

What IS in the scope of individuals is taking matters into your own hands. Buying more organic food from the supermarket, or utilizing some of the tips on this site to actually grow your own food.

We hope you find this site useful and inspiring. We may not be able to change the whole system, but we can certainly make a difference in our own actions!
